Description

This atlas, known as the Hacke Atlas or the Buccaneers Atlas was created after a valuable Spanish manuscript atlas was stolen by buccaneers including Bartholomew Sharp while on an adventure in in the South Sea.

This atlas covered most of the the coasts of eastern Africa, India, and the East Indies and was nothing like the English had ever seen before. It was quickly copied and led to a massive advancement in English cartographical knowledge which had been primarily centered in Spain, Portugal and even the Netherlands more so than English.

Atlas itself is hand-drawn manuscript in pen-and-ink and watercolor. Relief is shown pictorially and each drawing bears a brief description with soundings, distances and facts regarding anchorages and navigation of rivers which might be of value in pirating activities.

1 atlas (1 v. (various pagings)) : ms., col. ill., col. maps ; 47 x 38 cm.
