James Henderson studied Brazil during a failed visit to obtain a position at the British Legation in Rio; he was however, received into the house of a merchant, and the subsequent knowledge he gained of South America was sufficient for him to be appointed Consul General for Columbia in Bogota.
The views in this work are made from his own drawings on the spot and represent an important visual documentation of Brazilian history.
