The 12th century Abbey of La Trappe was situated in Normandy, about 100 km from Paris, in a solitary valley, surrounded by forest and lakes. The Abbey was destroyed at an early date, but was repurchased and given back to the Trappists in 1815, who rebuilt on the ruins of the original Abbey.

The first edition of Fellowes's travel book appeared in 1818 written from notes taken on a tour through Le Perche Normandy, Bretagne, Poitou, Anjou, Le Bocage, Touraine, Orleanois and the environs of Paris.

Includes an account of the career of Abbe de Rance
