Description

Balduin Mollhausen was the topographical draughtsman and naturalist to the expedition accompanying the party led by Lieutenant Amiel Weeks Whipple in the Pacific Railroad Survey Explorations of the Thiry-Fifth Parallel in 1853. This was one of three United States government contingents dispatched 1853 to survey possible railroad routes along the 35th parallel to the West coast.

The Whipple expedition left Fort Smith, Arkansas and ventured across Oklahoma and northern Texas into New Mexico and the Mohave Desert finally ending on the Pacific coast in California. This is an important book about early exploration in the American Southwest with an introduction by Alexander von Humboldt and illustrations in chromolithography. Contains accounts of;

"fresh and animated descriptions of wild nature in all the manifold variety of her forms, of the uncivilized state of the native tribes, and of the habits of various species of animals" (Humboldt)

First edition in English translated by Mrs. Percy Sinnett. The German edition was published the same year. Contains color-outlined folding map, 11 chromolithographs depicting North American Indians and western views and 12 wood-engravings.
