Description

Charles Stuart Cochrane was an English Navigator and Captain of the Royal Navy. In 1822 he embarked towards America thanks to the offer of sir Edward Owen travel on one of the ships under his command.

He came to the port of La Guaira where he was interested by the Pearl trade. He visited Caracas and then moved on to Colombia. He was on the Atlantic coast and in Bogota and toured the current departments of Cauca, Tolima, Antioquia, and Choco.

His journey is described in the two volumes of the "Journal of a Residence and Travels in Colombia, During the Years of 1823 and 1824" (London, 1825). The book offers an interesting portrait of the Colombian society of the post-independence period and includes some engraved in aquatint, of small size, colored, some signed by the cartoonist r. Cooper. The German version appeared that same year, in Jena.
